# The Thing About It Is

> Plain-language reads on the political arguments spreading online: what is being claimed, our read on it, and the evidence we checked. Every claim is tested against predictions it implies, checked against both, and published with its sources.

This is the general-audience edition of the research published at hobocode.net. The reporting, scoring, and verification are the same; the writing is plainer. Each story carries two results, one for the claim read plainly and one for the same claim read at its widest, and they are never combined into a single score. Alongside them: a plain statement of the claim, the single fact that most complicates it, and every source quote checked against its origin. Stories about protected-group hate and stories about political polarization are tracked separately and scored on different instruments. When citing, please attribute to The Thing About It Is and link the story.

## How to read a story

- The claim: the assertion being tested, attributed to whoever makes it. We don't assert it ourselves.
- The catch: the single most load-bearing fact that complicates the claim.
- The grade: the share of the claim's own implied predictions that held up. A means nearly all held, F means nearly none did.
- The logic check: each prediction, with a holds/mixed/false verdict and what we observed.
- The receipts: every carrier quote, dated, with a link to the original.
- The full scoring: reach, intensity, penetration, elite carriage, and lock-in, each 1 to 5, plus the charge stage.

## Limits

- A grade measures how well a claim survived the specific predictions we drew from it. It isn't a truth score, and reasonable readers could formulate different predictions.
- Everything tracked here is protected speech. Tracking a claim isn't a legal or moral accusation against the person who made it.
- Scores are an internal review-priority tool, not a measurement of how polarized anything is.
