On September 7 David Sacks had written that paid doomer messaging came from 'well organized, well funded campaigns.' On September 9 Jordan Schachtel wrote that the resignation had 'all the signs' of an 'op through doomer mega donors'. On September 10 Elon Musk replied 'Seems like a setup'. Their claim, shared by Parker Thayer, is that the AI safety side is a funded, organised operation.
The narrow reading is that the safety camp is a well-funded and organised network. That's a smaller claim than the one made: a network with money and organisation is a fact about the camp, and a staged resignation with the warnings as a pretext is a charge about what it did. On the smaller claim the record is clear. UnHerd's Tom Ough reported that philanthropic AI-safety funding through Coefficient Giving and the Survival and Flourishing Fund passed 100 million dollars a year by 2024, and that Public First Action, the pro-regulation network, had raised more than 80 million dollars by 30 June, including 20 million from Anthropic in February and a personal 1 million from Amodei in May. Sabine Hossenfelder said in early September she was offered a scripted sponsorship to warn of an AI apocalypse, and also reported that OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Perplexity pay creators on the other side. The money is real, and it runs both ways. It doesn't carry the claim as made, which didn't hold.
The wide reading is that the resignation was staged through donors and media and the warnings are a pretext. On the staging, the evidence that bears on it is the trail. Coxon gave the Journal an exclusive before posting and advocacy accounts quote-posted him within minutes, which Thayer's thread documents and Gizmodo calls a media tour that began 'literally overnight', and no one has produced a payment or direction trail. Axios reported he forfeited his unvested equity by leaving four months into a six-month cliff, and Coxon wrote 'This is not a marketing stunt.' A press-managed launch fits a placement and fits a person who wanted to be heard, and without a trail the staging charge rests on timing. On the pretext, on 12 September Amodei proposed independent evaluators inside frontier labs, common safety standards among democracies and international limits on recursive self-improvement; Altman wrote 'I agree with Dario that we need to pace the frontier', and Musk, two days after 'Seems like a setup', wrote 'Dario is right', which Robby Starbuck read as the signal, writing that 'if it was only Dario or Sam, I'd suspect shenanigans afoot.' Those endorsements show that the people best placed to know took the substance of the warnings seriously, which cuts against a pretext nobody believes. They say nothing about whether Coxon's resignation was arranged, since a real concern and a staged exit can sit together. The NBC News survey of 7,105 adults, fielded before Coxon's post, found 81 percent saying government does too little to regulate AI.
The other side answered at official level and is checked on its own card, Sanders asking Musk whether his 'setup' charge has 'anything to do with the fact that you have invested many billions of dollars in AI', Murphy writing that the China argument is what an industry 'hell bent on there being zero check on their power' wants people to believe, and Khanna writing that 'The tech lords act like priests who know Latin & keep the rest of us in the dark'. Each side's main evidence is the other's statements.
