Pierre Poilievre attended none of the four days of Conservative MP Dean Allison's vaccine injury hearings on Parliament Hill from September 8 to 11. On September 10 Maxime Bernier posted that 'Poilievre won't even say the words Allison Inquiry' and that 'You can't claim to fight for freedom while hiding from the consequences of mandates you never opposed.' Allison told Rebel News that Poilievre 'has been a big supporter'. On September 12 David Krayden wrote on Substack that Poilievre lacked the nerve to show support for the vaccine-injured. Their claim is that the Conservative leadership is hiding from mandates it never opposed.
The narrow reading is that Poilievre is hiding from the inquiry. He attended no session, CTV reported in August that his office didn't answer a question on attendance, and no post, statement or news item in the window from him or the party names the hearings. The only account of his stance is Allison's, 'I know Pierre has been a big supporter of this. His schedule is a lot busier than mine.' The distance is observable; the reason for it isn't.
The wide reading is that the leadership never opposed the mandates and its freedom talk is a pose. Bill C-278 was introduced under Allison's sponsorship in June 2022 with Poilievre championing it, and in September 2022 he demanded in the Commons and on camera 'End all the COVID vaccine mandates, now', calling the military mandate 'obviously unscientific and contradictory'. His opposition dates from the February 2022 convoy; through the 2021 election the O'Toole caucus he sat in didn't oppose mandates, which is the foothold the word 'never' reaches for. CTV reported that Allison had the caucus's approval and, on his account, Poilievre's, and two sitting Conservative MPs testified while the leader and the rest of the caucus stayed away, which reads as a leader in a trade-war parliament keeping a file he already owns at arm's length.
The Conservative side's only answer was Allison's, given to Rebel News in reply to questions about the absence, with no mention of Bernier and no charge running back. Nothing from Poilievre or the party's accounts mentioned Bernier or the inquiry in the window.
