On September 10, the first anniversary of Charlie Kirk's assassination, a 'Kirkiversary' trend ran on TikTok and X, with look-alike contests and neck jokes; the University of Tennessee condemned a flyer. The same day Netflix UK's account posted 'Nearly did himself a neck injury' for The Gentlemen, which Libs of TikTok and others read as a Kirk joke. Jack Posobiec posted that 'The Left is opening celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk', and Mike Cernovich wrote that the left 'celebrated it then'. On September 11 Matt Walsh wrote 'This is an ideology of destruction. A death cult.' Their claim is that the left celebrates Kirk's murder.
The narrow reading is that a real, visible current on the left mocked the killing on its anniversary and few on the left condemned it. Fox News, Yahoo News and the Deseret News documented the trend, from look-alike contests with thousands of upvotes on the anonymous app Fizz to a flyer the University of Tennessee condemned, and Piker's own post conceded 'this many charlie kirk memes'. Representative Dingell called the convention's 'he should be shot' shouts 'chilling and disturbing' and El-Sayed called them 'a call to violence', but neither statement touched the Kirkiversary trend, and the institutional condemnation came from a university and from Republican officials.
The wide reading is that the left as a camp, Democrats included, celebrates political murder and wants conservatives dead. Piker's post, the largest left-leaning item at 2,236,529 engagement, blames the memes on Kirk's and the antiwoke movement's treatment of marginalised groups and on a 'violent country led by hypocritical monsters', an attack on the target that stops short of endorsing the shooting; ContraPoints called the memeification 'extremely cruel in almost any other context' and read it as a reality check for MAGA. The Deseret News describes the celebrants as 'some people' and 'radicals online'. Nothing in the collection from the left's highest-reach accounts endorses the killing.
The left's answer, that the right is the violent side, is checked on its own card, and Piker's post answers this one by name, 'then claiming the left are the violent ones'. Each side's main evidence is the other's worst voices.
