THE THING ABOUT IT IS.
Fault Line Report · Education

The hate-crime reports have no police records behind them. The retaliation charge has no records at all.

What's happening

Ghent University opened a disciplinary investigation into Nathan Cofnas, the researcher whose plagiarism findings preceded Jason Arday's resignation and death, citing 'respect for human dignity and opposition to discrimination.' Anti-DEI outlets called it retaliation; a Labour MP said a white academic wouldn't have been hounded the way Arday was.

Our read

The narrowest claim holds up on independent records: FOI requests to two police forces returned no report matching any of Arday's hate-crime accounts, and the butchers he named deny the visits happened.

The retaliation charge stays open. Ghent's notice targets a discrimination concern and doesn't challenge the plagiarism findings, and the university won't say what conduct is at issue, so 'pure retaliation' and 'legitimate inquiry' are both still live.

How we know

Two checks: on whether any police record corroborates the hate-crime accounts, and on whether Ghent's notice targets the findings or something else.

Being right about what happened and wrong about what it proves are different failures, so these two lines never get averaged into one score. How this works

The logic check

If the claim is right, these things should be true. Here's what we found. Each check says which version of the claim it's testing, the plain one most people would hear or the widest one the same words could carry, and whether it carries the claim's own burden or establishes the background it sits on.

If the origin camp's claim that Arday fabricated hate-crime reports (a pig's head sent to his parents' home, a knife-wielding masked man confronting him twice, mailed bananas and bullets) is accurate, no independent police or freedom-of-information record should corroborate any of those accounts.

Reading survives
widest readingcarries the claim

A freedom-of-information request to Cambridgeshire Constabulary covering the relevant period returned no record of any matching police report; separate Metropolitan Police inquiries found no record of officers visiting the butcher shops Arday named, and those butchers denied any such visit occurred (Free Beacon FOI reporting, Aug 2026). source

If Cofnas's suspension is purely retaliatory for accurate reporting with no independent misconduct basis, Ghent University's own disciplinary notice should target the plagiarism findings themselves rather than describe a distinct discrimination-related concern.

Reading strained
both readingscarries the claim

Ghent University's 20 August notice opened a 'preliminary disciplinary investigation' specifically framed around 'respect for human dignity and opposition to discrimination,' not a challenge to the plagiarism findings, and the university declined to detail the underlying conduct at issue, citing confidentiality of the personnel file (The College Fix, Aug 2026). source

Research verdict: mixed evidence. The research found some of what the claim predicts and not the rest.

The claim is that Jason Arday's celebrated career rested on fabricated hate-crime stories that diversity politics let go unchecked, and that Ghent University's investigation of Nathan Cofnas, who exposed it, is punishment for whistleblowing. The plain part holds: a freedom-of-information request to Cambridgeshire Constabulary returned no matching police report, Metropolitan Police inquiries found no record of officers visiting the butcher shops Arday named, and the butchers deny any visit. The retaliation part is unsettled. Ghent's 20 August notice frames the inquiry around 'respect for human dignity and opposition to discrimination,' doesn't challenge the plagiarism findings, and the university won't say what conduct is at issue. So the fabrication charge is corroborated and the retaliation charge remains open.
